The original design for the hang glider was devised by Francis Rogallo at NASA's Langley Research Center. His flexible wing parachute was developed as a means of steering space vehicles during re-entry. After many variations by Rogallo and others, his invention subsequently caught on for use in organized sporting events during the 1970s.
