The KGB coined the term "dezinformatsia" -- the dissemination of false or misleading information intended to confuse, discredit or embarrass the enemy. Lies meant to confuse enemy intelligence agencies were usually delivered by double-agents; lies intended to turn public opinion against an enemy were delivered through forged documents and friendly, gullible or paid-for journalists. The KGB was particularly adept at disinformation, with a special department, Service A, dedicated solely to its production. The CIA and Western agencies also engaged in disinformation, but none were as dedicated to it as the KGB.
