The advisers are fictional.
You are Mikhail Gorbachev. It is August 18, 1991, and you are relaxing at your Black Sea villa when a delegation of high-ranking Soviet officials arrives unannounced and asks to see you. This is highly unusual. You phone out to see what's going on, but the lines have all been severed. The delegation forces its way inside and demands that you sign a declaration of a state of emergency -- effectively endorsing a coup transferring your powers to a group of old-guard communists. The delegation gives you one other option: resign and hand over authority to Vice President Gennadi Yanayev -- which would likely have the same effect. You could reject their demands, but the plotters would likely attempt to seize power anyway -- and your life could be in danger. What do you do?
