III. PRESENTING BOTH SIDES

During the initial planning stages, Turner told Isaacs that COLD WAR should not approach the conflict from just the United States or Soviet perspective. With that in mind, the series' producers have worked to bring in a wide spectrum of viewpoints and opinions. Key players in the conflict, such as North Vietnamese generals, tell their version of history -- as do Afghan peasants, West Berlin hausfraus and U.S. servicemen who manned nuclear missile silos.

Dr. Vladislav Zubok, a Russian Cold War scholar and one of the series' historians, was impressed by the willingness of the series' producers to present the Soviet and Russian perspective of the era.
