Help for Myanmar and China
The timing and the impact are almost too much to digest – two mega-disasters striking two Asian countries within two weeks. First, a cyclone struck Myanmar, killing up to 128,000 people. A week later, a massive earthquake struck central China, killing at least 14,000 people. The international relief community has mobilized to send help, and both countries will continue to need support in the coming days and weeks.

Storms kill 22 in Midwest, Southeast
A lethal Midwest tornado, with winds of up to 175 miles per hour, killed at least 22 people – including a mother protecting her son. The storm ravaged parts of Oklahoma, Missouri and Georgia. States of emergency were declared in Oklahoma and Georgia counties. Story

People turn to charities when they need help but where do charities turn when they need help? Some of the nation’s biggest charities are trying to figure that out. They report a surge in demand while their donations are slacking off. The people asking for help, though, don’t fit the profile of soup kitchens patrons.
